The year 1899 witnessed a stark decline in the lion population within the Gir forest, attributed to a ravaging famine. In response, Lord Curzon called off his planned hunting excursion to Gir and fervently appealed to the local residents to safeguard the remaining lion populace.

Over time, the Indian Government imposed a ban on hunting and killing in 1960.
